"The Slow Tune" is the title of a project I devised where pure harmonies from the overtone series are combined with the tempered scale. The overtones are present in a few reed ranks which I re-tune for the concert, and the tempered scale is found in the rest of the organ. The piece itself is improvised, but built on a strictly planned harmonic development starting from simple, pure intervals and, via combination of overtones (including partial nr.7 and 11) resulting in unusually brilliant sounds and gradually more and more unheard noises.
Music is a universe with multiple connections, where there are no solid walls between compositions of different styles and periods. As I develop my work as composer and performer, I see it all more and more as one flow. For this concert I chose works by Bach that already are stretching the boundaries of classical musical time. They are built up of unusually long and wide planes, repeating material in loops over pedal points. Using the special capabilities of the St.Nikolai organ, I am improvising my way in and out of Bach's music, dissolving the Pièce d'orgue and gradually building up the F major toccata for the end of the concert.
