Part One of "Sudden Landscapes" was premiered on March 20, with Stavanger Symphony Orchestra and conductor Christian Vasquez. Nils Henrik Asheim played the organ part, which instead of featuring independent solo passages engages in a tight and constant interplay with the orchestra.

The full version of the piece is planned to last 30-40 minutes. Part One, which was ready for the premiere, lasted 20 minutes.

Synopsis:

Hun har dratt på ferie til Grønland sammen med sin mann. Men noe har gått galt, under en skitur over isødet er de er kommet bort fra hverandre. Mens hovedpersonen snakker blir vi klar over at hun er i ferd med gå å igjennom forfrysningens forskjellige stadier. Kroppstemperaturen hennes synker, og mens vi registerer de fysiske symptomene hører vi hvordan hennes sinn reiser inn i ulike former for bevissthet, erindring og refleksjon. Forfatteren bygger i denne teksten bl.a. på vitneutsagn fra personer som har vært nær døden i langvarig nedkjøling.

 

Om verket og teksten:

Initiativet til prosjektet kom fra Nils Henrik Asheim, som kontaktet forfatteren Johan Harstad for å få laget en tekst til et verk for en skuespillerstemme og symfoniorkester. Johan Harstad er en av de sterkeste unge forfatterstemmene fra Stavanger, bl.a. prisbelønt for novellesamlingen "Ambulanse". Harstad skrev “Grader av hvitt” spesielt for dette prosjektet, med støtte fra Norsk Kulturråd. Teksten er skrevet som en monolog.

 

Om musikken og lydbildet:

Musikken veksler mellom dempede, "frosne" flater og store, kraftige bølgende partier hvor hele orkesteret brukes. Et elektronisk lydspor ligger som et grått/hvitt filter i lydbildet, sterkt tilstede i begynnelsen, gradvis fragmentert etterhvert. Noen av orkesterinstrumentene (strykekvartett og noe slagverk) er mikrofon-forsterket, med fokus på detaljer i lydbildet som vanligvis ville være uhørbare. Lyder fra skuespillerens stemme bearbeides også enkelte ganger elektronisk, slik at ulike tekst-typer har noe ulik klang og plassering i rommet. En vekselvirkning mellom det nære og det fjerne vil være et gjennomgående trekk. Spilletid ca 60 minutter.
